The Central Institute of English and Foreign Languages (CIEFL), Hyderabad, India, is an institute which does not have any competitor at the national level. It came into existence in 1958 and its aim was to bring about a qualitative change in the standard of English teaching methods in India. To achieve this aim, the institute devised various programs in the areas of research, development and training. The efforts paid off remarkably well and soon German, French and Russian were included as foreign language courses in the institute. The institute, which was initially known as Central Institute of English, was later renamed in 1973 as the Central Institute of English and Foreign Languages, and more foreign languages like Arabic, Spanish and Japanese were included as part of the curriculum. The Institute strives to attain academic excellence not only through the teaching of the rudiments of the languages but also focusing on the culture, literature and tradition of the country of their origin. The Institute has two more campuses; one at Lucknow and the other at Shillong.

The Central Institute of English and Foreign Languages also has a Department of Distance Education which commenced operations in 1973. This Department later on came to be known as the Department of Distance Education.
CIEFL is an independent institution which is a society registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860 and is deemed to be a University in terms of the University Grants Commission Act .The campus of the institute is in close proximity to the Osmania University, Hyderabad and has the following blocks :
