Introduction:
The Whitaker International Fellows and Scholars Program was set up with the sole objective of providing financial and other assistance to engineers and scientists in the field of biomedical engineering to enable them become top class leaders and professionals of exceptional merit. Through this program budding biomedical engineers can gain international experience and exposure.
The Whitaker Foundation, now known as the Whitaker International Fellows and Scholars program, was established by Ms. Helen Whitaker in 1975 in the memory of U.A. Whitaker, her philanthropist husband.
When Helen Whitaker died in 1982, a large part of her estate was used to fund the Whitaker Foundation. From its birth, the Whitaker Foundation had its focus on biomedical engineering and other related fields of medical research. Till date, the Whitaker Foundation has provided financial assistance to the tune of almost $ 700 million to universities and medical institutions for carrying out research work, for development of infrastructure and for other academic activities.
The Whitaker Foundation became defunct in 2006 after having provided 30 years of dedicated support to the field of biomedical engineering. As a parting note, the Foundation decided to utilize its funds by providing an opportunity to young biomedical engineers to acquire experience and exposure in their field, outside USA.
Eligibility :
A candidate is eligible to apply for a Whitaker Fellowship if :
- He/She has a bachelor's or master's degree in biomedical engineering (or bioengineering) by the start of the fellowship period.
- He/She has NOT received a doctorate by the fellowship start date.
- He/She has U.S. citizenship, or is a permanent resident of U.S.A.
- He/She has the language ability to carry out the proposed project in the host country at the time of departure.
- He/She has obtained his/her most recent degree within two years of the proposed start date.
- He/She has received a nomination letter from the dean of a school or chair of the biomedical engineering department at the institution he/she is attending, or has most recently attended.
A candidate is eligible to apply for a Whitaker Scholarship if:
- He/She has a degree in biomedical engineering by the scholarship application deadline and either holds a doctorate at the time of application (and obtained it within two years of the proposed start of the grant), or is currently an advanced PhD candidate who will receive the doctorate prior to departure.
- He/She has a U.S. citizenship, or permanent residence in the U.S.
- He/She has the language ability to carry out the proposed project in the host country at the time of departure.
- He/She has received a nomination letter from the dean of a school or chair of the biomedical engineering department from which he/she has obtained his/her doctoral degree.
Terms of Scholarship:
- For a maximum period of 1 academic year or a minimum of 1 academic semester for scholars.
- The stipend offered to a candidate depends on his experience and the expenses assumed to be incurred in the host country.
