Introduction:

The Association for Women in Science (AWIS) Kirsten R Lorentzen awards was initiated by the Association for Women in Science, which was established in 1971 at the annual meeting of the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology. AWIS champions the cause of women involved in various branches of scientific and technical studies at all levels of education. The AWIS Educational Foundation was formed in 1974 with the purpose of receiving and awarding donations. Contributions to the AWIS fund was initially made by the AWIS members, the first among them being Estelle Ramey, the then AWIS president.

The AWIS – Kirsten R Lorentzen Award is a scholarship program initiated by the AWIS Educational Foundation for graduates in physics, space physics or geophysics or even geoscience. An award of $ 1000 under this program is awarded once a year to a student who performs exceptionally well in academics as well as in outdoor sports, social service, music and other extra-curricular activities. Sometimes a student’s ability to perform under trying circumstances is also taken into consideration.

Eligibility:

Female graduates including those in the junior year of college, having physics, space physics, geophysics or geoscience are eligible to apply for the Kirsten R Lorentzen award

While considering students for the award, reviewers judge them on the basis of academic achievement. A great deal of importance is also given on their achievements outside of academics and their ability to overcome hurdles in their lives.

The AWIS – Kirsten R Lorentzen scholarship awards may be utilized for paying tuition fees, buying books, availing of a housing facility, conducting research work, traveling and even for meeting registration and publication expenses.
