The Association for Women in Science (AWIS) Kirsten R Lorentzen awards was initiated by the Association for Women in Science, which was established in 1971 at the annual meeting of the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology. The AWIS Kirsten R Lorentzen Award is a scholarship program initiated by the AWIS Educational Foundation for graduates in physics, space physics or geophysics or even geoscience. An award of $ 1000 under this program is awarded once a year to a student who performs exceptionally well in academics as well as in outdoor sports, social service, music and other extra-curricular activities. Sometimes a students ability to perform under trying circumstances is also taken into consideration.
