Universities in Manipur

Education System in Manipur

Manipur is one of the northeastern states in India with Imphal as its capital city. The various states bordering Manipur include Mizoram in the south, Nagaland in the north and Assam in the west. The education policy of the state is based on the national policy that lay stress on providing elementary education to all sections of the society. There is a Department of Education in Manipur having four different entities including the Department of Education (University and Higher Education). The literacy rate in the state is 59.89%. The universities in Manipur offer specialized degree courses for students in the northeastern region of India.

Courses offered at Universities in Manipur

The universities in Manipur offer a wide choice of courses to students in the northeastern region. Manipur University is the main center of higher education in the state having several colleges affiliated to it. The university has separate departments for science and humanities streams. The various courses offered under these streams include Anthropology, Bio-Chemistry, Computer Science, Linguistics, Economics, Journalism & Mass Communication and Library &Information Science among others. There is also another university in Manipur that offers a specialized course in agriculture.

Types of Universities in Manipur

There are only two major universities in Manipur namely Central Agricultural University and Manipur University. Both these universities are located in the capital city of Imphal. The Central Agricultural University was set up in 1992 with a definite aim to offer agricultural researchers and students a platform to hands-on research in the field of agricultural sciences. On the other hand Manipur University was established in the year 1980. There are 72 colleges affiliated to this university. Manipur Institute of Technology (MIT) is the constituent college of Manipur University.

Further, on 1st December 2000, IGNOU had set up a Regional Centre in Imphal under the North East Education Development project (NEEDP).
