Colleges in Kerala are run by either the state government or the private trusts. The Department of Collegiate Education is in charge of the administration of government colleges in the state. Thiruvananthapuram is one of the major academic hubs in Kerala and home to several professional education colleges, including 15 engineering colleges, three Ayurveda colleges, two colleges of homeopathy, and quite a few law colleges. Other higher education hubs in Kerala include Trivandrum and Kochi. According to a national survey of 2005-2006, Kerala recorded a literacy rate of 89.9%, which is highest among the states in India.
