In terms of geographical size, Bihar is the 12th largest state in India located in the eastern part of the country. Traditionally, the state has been one of the major centers of education with a literacy rate of 47.53% as per the 2001 census. Bihar is home to the University of Nalanda, which is among the earliest universities of India that dates back to the 5th century. The universities in Bihar have been important centers for higher learning and various research works for many years. There are twelve recognized universities in the state of Bihar and among these the University of Patna is the oldest and the most prominent.

The universities in Bihar offer a wide range of courses to students who wish to pursue their higher studies. Types of Universities in Bihar
There are several specialized universities in Bihar that offer degrees in subjects like medical science, agriculture as well as Arabic and Persian. These include Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences and Maulana Mazharul Haque Arabic and Persian University, Patna among others. The Nalanda Open University in Patna is another educational center that aims to offer education to those who are not able attend regular university classes. Another university offering specialized course is the Rajendra Agricultural University located at Pusa, Samastipur in Bihar.
In addition to the above mentioned specialized universities, the other centers of higher education in Bihar include BRA Bihar University, Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar Bihar University, Jai Prakash Vishwavidyalaya Chapra and many more. There is also a Sanskrit university in Bihar called Kameshwar Singh Darbhanga Sanskrit University.
