Education System in Assam
Assam is a state in the northeastern part of India with Dispur as its capital, which is a suburb of Guwahati. The state has one of the most extensive higher educational institutions networks in the whole of the North-Eastern region of India. Guwahati, the largest city in Assam, is a major destination for education in the north-eastern region. According to the 2001 census, the literacy rate of Assam was recorded at 63.30%. Today, there are several universities in Assam along with one deemed university offering higher education to students from various parts of the state as well as from other places in India.
Types of Universities in Assam
In addition to the general Universities in Assam, the state government has recognized the importance of technical education. Hence the state pays due attention towards the development of a number of technical universities and institutes in Assam. Two of the leading universities in Assam for technical education are Indian Institute of Technology and National Institute of Technology. These institutes offer undergraduate and post graduate courses such as B. Tech., M. Tech., Ph.D. and M. Sc. Programs.
The general universities in Assam include Assam University, Guwahati University, Dibrugarh University and Tezpur University. Of these, the Tezpur University also offers distance education in several education disciplines. In addition to the degree courses, some of universities in Assam also offer one year diploma programs in various subjects. The other specialized university is the Assam Agricultural University, which is dedicated to imparting education in agriculture as well as other related branches of learning. It is involved in furthering the development of learning and execution of research in agriculture and other various allied sciences.
At present more and more students come to Assam for pursuing their higher education.
The state government has done much to improve the system of education in Assam by introducing better facilities and generally enhancing the learning environment.
