Higher Education in Assam
Assam boasts of one of the most widespread network of higher education institutions in the whole of North-Eastern region of India. It has the maximum number of colleges and universities as compared to the other states in North-East region in India. The male literacy rate in the state is higher than the literacy rate recorded amongst the female population. According to the 2001 census, the literacy in Assam was at 63.30 % with female literacy at 54.60% and male at 71.30%. The dropout rate is higher among the tribal women in the state as compared to the men. In the recent years, the state has made strides in introducing several high standard institutions to offer education various disciplines.
